Kelly McCarthy: Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)

Kelly McCarthy is the second feature writer for the "Meet the Mentors" blog column! Her topic is the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE).

I hope you all had a great Fall Break! My name is Kelly McCarthy and I am currently a senior in Industrial Engineering. Since my sophomore year, I have been involved in the Institute of Industrial Engineers, or IIE. My first semester I was a general member, and from there I was the Digital Media chair, Director of Public Relations and Marketing, and now I am serving as the Vice President.

IIE is the largest professional society for Industrial Engineering. Here at Purdue, we have over 100 members. IIE offers both professional and social events for students to develop professionally, network, give back to the community, and socialize with other IE students. We hold multiple professional developments throughout each semester, which range from case studies, to info sessions, to plant tours.

IIE has given me the ability to meet and get to know so many students in my major, which has allowed me to ask for advice on what classes to take, what professors are good, and for homework help. These people have become more than just classmates; they have become some of my closest friends. IIE has also given me leadership opportunities and a chance to get to know IE professors and staff. There is a variety of positions to choose from, so you’re bound to find something that fits your interests.

If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to reach out to me! You can also check out the IIE website at www.purdue.edu/iie.
